Redrow - the leading house builder - reports record numbers of trainees as recruitment rises by a fifth. 353 trainees were recorded as working for the firm this year - a 19% rise on 2016.
A wide selection of those trainees are working to become quantity surveyors, designers and civil engineers.
The news follows the UK Government's Autumn 2017 Budget announcement of over £200 million funding to boost construction skills.
While many trainees at Redrow undertake construction trade apprenticeships, they also have access to a range of careers as well as undergraduate placements and graduate programmes. Commercial and technical apprentices can achieve a degree and professional membership of either the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, Institute of Civil Engineers or the Chartered Institute of Building over a 7 year period, fully funded by Redrow and finishing without incurring any student debt.
Karen Jones, HR Director at Redrow and trustee of the Construction Industry Training Board says:
'The construction industry faces a looming skills gap that will only be exacerbated by Brexit, House builders like us are investing in the next generation of construction industry talent'.
As part of Redrow's holistic approach to training, apprentices get the chance to develop their leadership and management skills by undertaking projects in the community. Current graduates are already working on the Big Build Challenge launched by Considerate Constructors to engage with local school children and get them thinking creatively about the environment.
In Bristol a group of 12 graduate trainees recently completed a project in partnership with Help Bristol's Homeless to convert an empty shipping container into a habitable space for the city's homeless population.
