V&A Director warns on future technical education


Tristram Hunt, new director of the V&A has delivered a speech at our Future Cities Forum warning that we need to look at a new type of technical education to help shape our economy.

Blackburn and Coventry museums have been chosen to spearhead a project to promote design education for the future. Cities with a long history of design and manufacturing Tristram feels should be involved. Blackburn is known for its textiles and Coventry for developing the car industry.

The project will align with a new design and technology GCSE starting in the autumn and Tristram hopes this will be the beginning of a move to fill the gap in training and vocational skills for industry.

Tristram also spoke of the need for museums to move forward in financial independence but says this is a difficult time to achieve such an aim:
