Cushman and Wakefield - constructive conservation
Cushman and Wakefield report an interest from the NHS in using old mill buildings for offices because of the flexible space they offer.
Future Cities Forum will be looking at the topic of 'healthy office' environments as well as housing and hospital design in our 'Healthy Cities' event on 9th October in London's Docklands.
Partner at Cushman, Stephen Miles, who spoke on re-purposing historic mills at our forum this summer at Burlington House, London, says that Historic England's adopted phrase of 'constructive conservation' is important as it acknowledges that some sacrifice in heritage is necessary if we do not want mill buildings to stay vacant.
Watch Stephen's interview with Future Cities Forum where he advocates a more 'patient' form of investment for mill conversions with flexible repayment terms.
Local authorities he says should take a more 'corporate' approach to mill developments recognising that these projects often create jobs and produce income generation.
