Trinity Cambridge modernised but preserved

Preserving our city heritage has been a topic that we have discussed since we began our forum last year and is at the core of our forum this June at Burlington House, London.
Often historic buildings have additional construction or retrofit issues that have to be sensitively managed to preserve heritage not only of the building but also for the environment. Cowen Court provides student accommodation within Churchill College Cambridge and has been named as Cambridge's Best New Building 2016 by the Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry. Unusually, it is covered in timber from French railway carriages and has a birch 'forest' in the centre. Beacon Planning provided planning and heritage advice through out the planning, design and construction phases.
Beacon Planning based in Cambridge advises on complex issues involving heritage buildings and has also been involved in the New Court project at Trinity College, Cambridge, as part of the design team on heritage issues. The project concentrated on the refurbishment of student accommodation at the Grade 1 listed building improving environmental performance while meeting standards of accommodation for students. It won the award 'Best Conservation Alteration or Extension of an Existing Building at the 2015 Cambridge Design and Construction Awards.
