National Museums Liverpool at the heart of the visitor experience
Janet Dugdale, Executive Director of National Museums Liverpool will be speaking at our Future Cities Forum in Liverpool this month.
She is responsible for the museums, collections, curatorial and administrative teams at World Museum, Museum of Liverpool, Merseyside Maritime Museum, the international Slavery Museum and Seized! (the Border Force national collection and museum) Her remit also includes the Canning Graving Docks.
National Museums Liverpool is a group of diverse venues that attracted over 3 million visitors last year. The collections contain a wide range of items from Impressionist paintings to a lifejacket from the Titanic. In March a new exhibition 'Charles Rennie Mackintosh - Making the Glasgow Style' will open and currently 'Tales from the city' reveals the experiences of Liverpool's LGBT+ community, fifty years on from the 1967 Sexual Offences Act, with cases of discrimination and prejudice as well as examples of self-determination, resilience and creativity.
Janet's experience includes delivering high profile and complex project and exhibitions, developing strategic partnerships and advocating for museums with a people-based/storytelling approach.
She has worked in history museums since 1988. Her career started with the Greater Manchester Archaeological Unit, followed by the Lake District Art Gallery and Museum Trust where she ran the Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry and was a founding member of the Kendal Oral History Society.
Janet holds a History degree from the University of Manchester, a graduate Diploma in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester and has taken the UEA Museum Leadership Programme. She is a Fellow of the Museums Association and the Royal Society of Arts.
