Infrastructure projects for 2020

In the run up to our infrastructure forum at Herbert Smith Freehills, in London, we are featuring the latest news on infrastructure projects in the UK and abroad.

Balfour Beatty has won a £217 million highways contract with Lincolnshire County Council with work beginning in Spring 2020.

The work includes ensuring a safe and sustainable local road network through the maintenance of nine thousand kilometres of highways, carriageways and footpaths. Commitments to the community involve hiring 90% of the workforce from the local area. In addition, 63 apprenticeships will be created and 24 graduate placements.

Further afield Foster and Partners have revealed designs for a new Red Sea Airport set to welcome a million visitors by 2030. The terminal building has been inspired by the forms of the desert, the green oasis and the sea. The airport will be powered by 100% renewable energy.

The design of the terminal aims to bring the experience of a private aircraft terminal to every traveller by providing smaller, intimate spaces that feel luxurious and personalised. An internal green oasis with an indigenously planted garden forms a green focus creating a relaxed resort like atmosphere within the airport terminal.

The arrival experience is about speed of processing passengers while welcoming them to their destination. It gives them a first impression of the Red Sea Experience, with the building designed to give an immersive experience of the highlights of the resort, tempting visitors with a flavour of what is to come. Spas and restaurants feature in large relaxing spaces in the departure area designed as a series of pods where travellers can relax before boarding.
